Christian Faith, Guide to the by William A. Spurrier

An elegant, gentle yet firm piece of writing with pockets of humour to illuminate some dark and preconceived dead ends in using human thought to perceive God, and who or indeed what God is.

A very well organised and digestible book for the intelligent layperson, and an essential read for those in the faith and those peeking in for a look-see.

I just wonder who Mr William A. Spurrier is, as there isn’t much information on this man. He has organised his matured thoughts into several books. Martin Luther King had read this book and cited from it.

I’m so glad to have serendipitously picked this original 1952 hard-cover from a pile of vintage books at Books Actually, Singapore. It had wedged in its pages a receipt from a bookshop in Oxford dated 1985. There’s something transcendental about old books that pre-date me, and the tactile connection with a prior time allows me to contemplate and attest to my existence in relation to history, the present, and the future.

As a result of this I don’t think I’ll ever appreciate the appeal of a Kindle or E-books.

Wittgenstein hitchhikes around the galaxy

By far the most illuminating and entertaining passages alluding to some of Wittgenstein’s ideas, in un-mathematical form for my un-mathematical mind.

Philosophising is a little like running on a treadmill. You exhaust yourself going nowhere. But really, was it nowhere? Was your destination not already presupposed by the fact that someone (perhaps even yourself) had already decided to put the treadmill exactly there?

My point: People’s beliefs and convictions in things like politics, religion and which football team to support are so much pre-decided, sometimes based on logic so tenuous, or on weakly examined assumptions that have through centuries of recycled thought weaved themselves into common knowledge.

Eg. “Only 1% of DNA really codes for proteins, the rest is junk”.

Thankfully scientists appreciated the fallabillity of knowledge, continued work on junk DNA and have now discovered that within this junk are rather important regulatory proteins. History books are being rewritten again and again. We must always bear the fact that we could be spectacularly wrong about what we know, in mind.

Lastly, if running on the treadmill were to anyway be done then perhaps it should be done with the best of one’s abilities, with the effect of sharpening said skill.

So to conclude, if we were to think anyway, we may as well do it with rigour and pursuit of best practice.

Although when thinking stops, (the un(der)examined) life still seems to go on.

Perhaps only when we’ve exhausted our intellectual capabilities contemplating what rainbows taste like, can we intuitively discover the answer.

Perhaps also I’ve gone loopy and need to stop watching so many cartoons and eating too many skittles.

life cycles

As off-kilter as I feel my life balance is, it seems better than it ever was. I’m finally getting to read the books I’ve been lining up on Amazon these past five years. There is something about being in one place for longer than a year, something about not having to move house on an annual basis, and something about not moving jobs every four months.

I’m finding it easier and easier to be obstinate about my choice of location, to back up the fact that yes, I want to be on this island, Singapore. Lesser the country and its stifling quirks, more a base from which to operate. A place to earn a living, a place to call home, a home to rearrange stuff in, in the middle of the night, a place to roam in the wee hours without the blistering cold, the wet wind, the fear for your life.

Occasionally this scares me. My routine scares me. I catch myself in a narrow train of thought and jolt, shiver, scare myself into a panic. “What if I become one of them?”

How about coming back to a place I once knew…

As much as I sometimes like to wipe the slate clean and spawn new beginnings, some history and familiarity adds some relevance and context to a present existence, however cringeworthy.

I like this space. Though it needs a paint job or two, a dusting and a few bulbs fixing, it already has a fair amount of machinery! I’d got my ideas from paper to screen with some web design work, along with months of hard work by James and Rob from both hemipheres of Earth splicing the design templates into a blog…James installing the wordpress blogging software into chilon, amidst a gazillion other geeky bits that spring up as you’re doing these things.

Back I come. It’s like a cluttered home with a mammoth plumbing system that makes it virtually impossible to tweak without overhauling the infrastructure. Can’t change the paintings on the wall without tearing the wall down and building another one type thing. I know…but it’s cosy.

Incidentally, my July Project is: Bedroom Makeover!
